Statistics of Hemorrhoids

In a technical sense, we all have hemorrhoids, which simply refers to clusters of veins located just below the surface of the mucous membranes of the anus and rectum. What we commonly call hemorrhoids (also called piles) is what occurs when these veins become swollen, like varicose veins.

About half of adults older than age 50 have hemorrhoids. (according to Fox A, Tietze PH, Ramakrishnan K. Anorectal conditions: hemorrhoids. FP Essentials. 2014;419:11–19)

An estimated 10 million Americans suffer with hemorrhoids each year. The average person suffers for a long time before seeking treatment for hemorrhoids.

Advances in treatment methods means some types of hemorrhoids can be treated with far less painful methods than before.
